With the onset of monsoon in India comes the holy fasting of Mondays…..’Sawan Ke Somvaar’ as we call it.
Most of us fast to worship Lord Shiva, but the reasons for fasting might vary among individuals. Most people fast for their religious beliefs. Fasting for religious belief has its own advantage. This is a way to show gratitude for the blessings in the form of family and friends and the life we are living. This shows that we have undaunted faith in the supreme power. This faith gives us the courage to keep going whenever life knocks us down.
Many of us fast to detoxify our body and brain. Fasting to detoxify gives body much-needed nourishment. Even if it’s a day long fast it gives our body a break. When we fast we stay away from the over-indulgence, in a way we feel content in whatever little we have on the day we fast. This feeling of contentment even if it’s a short-lived is a boost to the brain health.
Fasting can be a safe way to lose weight too. It allows the body to burn through fat cells more effectively than just regular dieting.
Fasting Improves Insulin Sensitivity so it’s a good news for diabetic people.
Fasting helps to regulate the hormones in your body so that you experience what true hunger is.
When fasting is done with full faith it offers us some psychological benefits too. Fasting is not only stopping ourselves from the over-indulgence of food but when fasting one should try to stay away from all other clutter too. Try to stay as calm as possible. Avoid the feeling of anger, revenge, jealousy, comparison and all sort of competition. Feel the love and blessed and try to be happy on the day you are fasting. Happiness is a habit, though we all know that it gets difficult to follow it in today’s scenario where we are running to outrun others. The fasting has no meaning if you are cursing others for whatever reason.
Fasting for self-enlightenment, allows us to feel better both consciously and physically. With a lighter body and a clearer mind, we become more aware and grateful for the things around us.
When we stay happy and calm, it makes our vision clear and there is a whole new perspective of life. Going on regular fasting with the feeling of happiness and contentment refreshes and recharge our mind, body and soul.
Remember, you don’t have to starve when you are fasting. Give your body the nourishment that it needs. Have plenty of fluids (of course, not the Coke and Pepsi stuff). Eat lots of fruits.
